Bike / Walk in Memory
Expanding my art work as bike month continues
On Sunday May 3rd we decorated a city bike with community art made by youth and adults. We then took it back to the park so others could ride it fully decorated. Did anyone? Has anyone spotted it? Were the decorations taken home? They were all easy to take off, a gentle attachment with either pipe cleaners or masking tape so as not to damage the bike. Just a way to share a little happiness, get people to slow down and notice the moment and importantly the people. Bikes are not obstacles to get around, those are people riding them.
Won’t you ride your bike with me? In memory of those who have been taken away by traffic violence we ride and walk as one. For those who don’t know I have had a close friend killed by a hit and run while she was on her bicycle. She was almost home. And her home was next door to mine. I have a daily reminder of this loss as I had previously a daily visual of her. We rode bikes together, we took long walks together, we ate, celebrated and talked all the time. She was there for me when I had a loss a month before losing her. So this has been a double grieving year for me.
If you are able to please join us. I have been collecting more pipe cleaners and tissue paper from neighbors so that we can decorate bikes before the ride. Or you can hold a flower as you walk.
